Removing urine from leather

Urine on leather furniture, clothing, or accessories can be a persistent problem. This could happen due to an accident caused by a pet, a child, or another incident. In addition to leaving stains, urine can also cause an unpleasant odor. Leather is a porous material, which means liquids can easily penetrate and the smell can settle deep into the fibers. Fortunately, there are effective methods to remove both the stain and the odor without damaging the leather.

Why is it difficult to remove urine from leather?

Leather is a natural product that, depending on its finish, can absorb moisture. When urine penetrates leather, ammonia and other odor-causing molecules attach to the fibers, resulting in a strong smell. Additionally, urine can disrupt the pH balance of leather, leading to drying out, discoloration, or even damage to the protective layer of the material. Therefore, it is crucial to remove urine as quickly as possible and treat it properly.

What NOT to do when dealing with urine on leather

Do not use aggressive cleaning agents such as bleach, alcohol, or ammonia. These can damage the leather. Simply blot the stain with a soft cloth. A hard brush or abrasive sponge can leave scratches. Avoid excessive water as it can cause stains and make the leather swell.

Step-by-step process to remove urine from leather

  1. Blot the urine immediately
The sooner you act, the better. Use a clean, absorbent cloth or paper towel to soak up as much urine as possible. Do not rub the spot, as this can push the urine deeper into the leather.
  2. Clean the affected area
Dip a soft cloth into a cleaning solution and wring it out so it is damp but not dripping wet. Gently blot the urine stain, working from the outside in to prevent spreading. Alternatively, spray the stain with a suitable cleaning spray.
  3. Neutralize odors with an enzymatic cleaner
If the smell persists, an enzymatic cleaner like UF2000 4Pets is an excellent solution. This product contains enzymes that break down the urine odor molecules rather than merely masking them. Spray it directly on the affected area and let it soak according to the instructions. If the urine has soaked deep into the leather couch, ensure that UF2000 (4Pets) penetrates deeply as well. To do this, remove the bottle cap and pour some of the product into the couch. This gives the best chance of all the urine coming into contact with UF2000, which is necessary for complete odor neutralization.
  4. Carefully dry the leather
Use a clean, dry cloth to absorb excess moisture. Let the leather dry naturally, preferably in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources like a hairdryer or radiator, as these can dry out and crack the leather.
  5. Treat and condition the leather
After cleaning and drying, it is advisable to apply a leather conditioner or balm. This helps restore the leather’s natural oils and prevents drying out or stiffness.

Removing urine from leather requires a quick and careful approach. By using the right products and methods, you can effectively eliminate stains and odors without damaging the leather. Any questions? Contact us for more information or check out the products in our webshop.
